Jay Sullivan, Director of Product Management, Messenger Privacy and Safety noted in her recent blog post that by limiting forwarding, the app hopes to effectively slow the spread of viral misinformation that can cause real world harm. Interestingly, amidst much scrutiny, the update comes ahead of elections in New Zealand and United States.Eyebrows have often been raised concerns on how Facebook or social media in general can be misused in times of elections in today’s digital world. Specifically, ever since the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal, the social media giant has constantly been under scrutiny for its data handling. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic and our increasing dependence on tech has definitely not helped these concerns in any way.
